Location matters more than people expect on bathroom projects, and not only for drive time. Permit requirements and inspection scheduling vary by city and county, and a contractor who works in your jurisdiction regularly already knows how that process runs. Housing stock varies too. A postwar rambler, a 1970s split-level, and a newer build each hide different things behind the shower wall, and somebody who has opened a lot of walls in your neighborhood tends to know what to expect before demo starts.
Bathroom work tracks the housing stock closely. Salt Lake City and Ogden bring original mortar-bed showers and galvanized supply lines. The tract belt through West Jordan and Taylorsville brings builder corner tubs nobody uses. Newer construction in Utah County brings rooms that function fine and simply underwhelm.
Knowing which of those you have is most of the matching. A contractor who is careful in a hundred-year-old house is not automatically the one you want for a straightforward builder-bath update, and the reverse holds too.
